该剧由Michael Connolly打造，故事根据Philipp Meyer所著小说改编，他亲自担任编剧兼制片人，Lee Shipman和Brian McGreevy参与剧本创作。该剧通过一个德州石油巨富家族的兴衰成败来反映美国的「超级大国」之路，故事将延续多代人（中国人最喜爱的模式）。皮尔斯-布鲁斯南（Pierce Brosnan）扮演迷人的McCullough家族掌门人Eli McCullough。他在德州正式成为独立共和国的那天出生，因此获得绰号「德州第一子」。1849年，年仅13岁的Eli被一个科曼奇族印第安部落绑架。印第安人强奸了他的母亲和姐姐，他被战酋Toshaway当做儿子养大。Eli学会了科曼奇族的战斗和打猎方式，接受了科曼奇族残酷的世界观，这对他今后的经商之道有重要影响。16岁时，他已经是一名令人畏惧的战士。后来Eli回到了白人的世界，但他与一个法官的妻子偷情，迫使他加入德州游骑兵。在内战中，Eli偷走了一个北方家庭的财产，回到德州南部当起了富翁。为了得到一个大型农场，他煽动墨西哥人去屠杀农场主Garcia家族。他将自己在科曼奇族印第安部落学到的世界观用于生意场，通过石油生意进一步集聚了大量财富。他对蛮荒西部有着深刻的认知，彪悍的德州人很快将被「完全驯化」，这让他不高兴。到了1915年，他已经是德州首屈一指的富豪，但他对于自己的未来感到非常不确定，尤其是遗产分配问题。这个角色原本应该由Sam Neill扮演，但他因个人原因退出了剧组。AMC证实该剧的时间跨度长达150年，第一季只代表其中的一段。皮尔斯-布鲁斯南表示自己与制片方签了三年合约，意味着他所扮演的角色终究是要死的。对于一部150年跨度的剧集，前后延续四五代人都是很正常的。
