该剧讲述了夏菊花极富传奇色彩的一生。夏菊花出生在一个贫穷的农民家里。5 岁时，父母为生活所迫，将她送给了马戏班的夏老板，做“压子”之女，改姓夏，忍受着非人的折磨，开始了艰辛的卖艺生涯。终于，她迎来了解放。50年代，她辗转进入了汉口“民众乐园”，从此她登上了人民的舞台。此后她更加的刻苦练功，不断钻研，最终以《顶碗》和《柔术叼花》两项绝技享誉国际杂技艺术界。夏菊花在50年代至70年代先后历任人大代表、中国杂技家协会、全国政协委员、国际杂技大赛评委等重要职务，并多次率团出国演出，为祖国争夺了荣誉，为杂技事业奉献了一生。
