故事以北宋哲宗时代为背景，通过丐帮帮主乔峰、大理世子段誉、少林小僧虚竹三人的江湖历险与爱恨情仇，以及围绕在他们周围的一众江湖人物，展现了纷繁复杂的武林恩怨和无计可消除的贪嗔痴怨，勾勒了一副充满人情世态的生活画卷，亦象征大千世界的芸芸众生，皆逃不出“情”之一字带来的痛苦纠缠。
故事聚焦于一个在自己精神世界中挣扎的、孤独的女人身上。简在婚礼仪式上被未婚夫抛弃后，20年来饱受精神分裂的折磨，在混乱的精神状况下，她的情感关系（无论是真实的还是想象的）和家庭关系矛盾重重。在医院看病的一天，简遇见了迈克——一个失败的、迷失的音乐家。两人开始了一段黑色喜剧性的浪漫故事，在这之中，情况发生了变化。
剧讲述了郑荣与郑良两兄弟得兵部尚书杨大人收养后，成为锦衣卫。东厂督主刘青设计让锦衣卫指挥使方明山派郑荣刺杀杨大人。郑荣悔恨错杀义父，作证人扳倒方明山。郑良搞清真相，解救郑荣，两人联手与东厂殊死一搏。
