一九四四年日本人占领的东北某小镇，赵长林在日本人渡边家里做杂役，并对同样做杂工的玉秀产生了爱意。渡边醉酒要强暴玉秀，赵长林砍死了渡边，并在渡边妻子美惠子的帮助下带着玉秀逃走了。在逃亡的路上两人失散了……醒来时，自己已被日本兵抓去冲俘以对付八路军，并改名为马宝财。战斗中，被打昏的赵长林，醒来发现已经躺在了八路军的医院里……回家的路上巧遇被人贩子卖的玉秀，并将她救下，可就在长林给玉秀买吃的回来的路上，玉秀遇难了……赵长林投奔了八路军。赵长林失去了玉秀，性格变得古怪，除了拼命练武，和谁也不说话。大家都认为他脑子有问题，但唯独班长丁永泉不这么认为。赵长林没有离开部队，他很感谢丁永全，在八路军的队伍里，赵长林渐渐活跃起来，他有弄不懂的事情就请教丁永全。战斗中，由于赵长林的鲁莽，丁永全负伤住进了医院。赵长林去医院看望，丁永全告诉他，一个女护士爱上了他，不想竟是自己朝思暮想的玉秀……抗美援朝战争开始了，赵长林对丁永全说谁活着回来，谁娶玉秀。朝鲜战争进入了最后阶段，每一场战斗都很激烈，赵长林依然很英勇，
结果走在路上，被彭越所截杀。
