影片讲述了一代天骄成吉思汗的早年生活。俄罗斯著名电影导演谢尔盖·博德罗夫指导的有关讲述成吉思汗生平的电影《蒙古王》。《蒙古王》拍摄历时4年，分别在中国，蒙古和哈萨克斯坦取景，一共耗资1500万欧元，这个投入按照俄罗斯标准来说非常多。电影中的宏大制作是成吉思汗与其兄扎木合(中国演员孙红雷扮演)对阵的那段。仅此一段的拍摄就耗资200万欧元，试镜工作花费了2个月。
