退休钳工梁德全和退休的副局长付国祥住进同一病房。由于两人生活习惯和性格的不同，发生了很多争执。但随着接触的深入，他们成了无话不说的老哥们儿。老梁的病打破了三个子女原本安宁的生活，为了住院费，三个家庭开始猜忌争吵。老梁有几个愿望，一是找到初恋情人菊英；一个是去新疆看看大儿子。在老付的帮助下，老梁逐一实现了心愿，其间有矛盾，有悲喜，有子女的不理解。在老梁弥留之际，老付读出了他对子女生活点滴的记录和感想，老梁的子女们声泪俱下，才明白原来他们一直生活在父爱的注视中，他们的平安幸福就是老爸最后的心愿。
