该剧以辛亥革命到全国解放这一时期，上海几次大的社会变革为背景，表现了中国共产党带领上海人民反抗外敌侵略，反抗压迫，最终获全国解放，翻身做主的历史过程。在这一场革命中，形形色色各个阶层的代表人物，纷纷登上历史舞台。人物的命运始终贯穿于历史演进中，既有刀光剑影的谍战情节，也有扎实细致的战争描写。该剧延续了胡玫导演用人物见证历史的创作理念，讲述了旧上海邵姓一家人悲欢离合的故事，同时也以宏大的视角描绘了上海从辛亥革命到新中国建立前夕的各大历史事件。而其中尤让人唏嘘不已的便是主人公邵年华与秦文昭几十年的艰辛情路。两位年轻人从懵懂青涩的初恋到天各一方的相守，真实再现了在历史大潮前，个人与国家，孰轻孰重的两难抉择。
