故事发生在北平，叙述的是从1937年到1948年北平解放前夕两代人的生活经历。1937年，卢沟桥的炮声点燃了中华民族的抗日烽火，刚刚走出大学校的青年路童谣、赵大勇、吴霞等为挽救民族危亡和北平人民一齐投入抗日救亡的工作中。北平沦陷后，几个热血青年选择了不同的生活道路，童辛去了抗日前线；童谣结婚过着小日子；吴霞随家人到大后方避难。
