本片根据赵乾乾同名小说改编。
故事讲述身为个体户杂货进货商的主人公井之头五郎，在工作的闲暇时间于各个地方的饮食店用餐的故事。五郎光顾的地方大部分都是平民消费的地方，故事中并没有讲述某种菜肴蕴含的价值，而只是单纯描述五郎这个中年男子吃饭时心中的想法。
根据汉代史学家司马迁撰写的史记改编，将里面著名故事如战国四大公子等用动画表现出来，使其更加生动易懂。
