本剧故事开始于新中国热火朝天的1956年，文丽与佟志是一对平凡夫妻，他们的婚姻始于阳光灿烂的五十年代，经历了上世纪新中国成立后的五十年代，六十年代，七十年代，八十年代，九十年代以及到新世纪，经历着新中国历史上变化最激烈最巨大的五十年。这部戏不仅是男女主人公的五十年婚姻生活史，同时也是新中国的一部共和史。本剧以编年体的形式，一年又一年地讲述了这对夫妻五十年坎坷婚姻路。
