命运捉弄人，1967年因炸死犹太律师和两个孩子的死刑萨姆，在临刑前28天第一次见到孙子——已成为助理律师的亚当。萨姆在知道亚当是自己的孙子后，开始回答亚当的问题。他说他是因为家族的关系而参与到三K党活动中去的。他的祖父反对解放奴隶，是三K党创始人之一。他去杀人完全是履行职责。萨姆通过明查暗访，了解到萨姆根本不懂爆破，所以，他不可能是主谋。只要官方允许他调阅档案，他相信还能找到更充分的证据。但是州长不同意，萨姆也表示要放弃，不再上诉。
