据导演何群透露，《新青年》将区别于传统主旋律史诗剧的严肃刻板，适当加入轻喜剧的叙事成分，呈现一种幽默的风格。何群曾表示，该剧涉及辛亥革命、二次革命、新文化运动、第一次世界大战、五四运动、中国共产党成立、南昌起义等历史事件，但采取的不是正面强攻的方式，而是聚焦大历史背景中的小人物命运。
