描述一位女大巴司机在偏僻路途上的遭遇，道出了人性的光辉与黑暗。该片讲述的故事发人深省：这天，很多乘客挤上长途车44，其中有一个乘客引起了大巴司机的注意。男青年眉宇中流露出来的一种特别气质，令女司机对他颇有好感，交谈了几句之后，长途车开始远行了。不料，在公路上遇到几名劫匪，他们不仅将票款抢劫一空，还胁迫女司机到路边荒草地中欲施强暴，可是车上所有的乘客都无动于衷，男青年在动员无效后，一个人冲到车下要求匪徒放过女司机，可是反被刺中一刀，司机也未能幸免于难。司机被匪徒放回后继续开车，可是却将挺身而出的男青年赶下车。后来，心理还是纳闷的男青年终于又搭上另外一辆汽车，汽车在行进中被后面开来的一辆警车超过，男青年不由得更加关心女司机的命运，事情很快有了答案，44号公车翻落在山沟里，女司机和车上乘客全部遇难。男青年成了最幸运的人。
