故事发生在北平，叙述的是从1937年到1948年北平解放前夕两代人的生活经历。1937年，卢沟桥的炮声点燃了中华民族的抗日烽火，刚刚走出大学校的青年路童谣、赵大勇、吴霞等为挽救民族危亡和北平人民一齐投入抗日救亡的工作中。北平沦陷后，几个热血青年选择了不同的生活道路，童辛去了抗日前线；童谣结婚过着小日子；吴霞随家人到大后方避难。

What is not mentioned in this book is that after Aban left the newspaper, Clark went to New York to find Zhao Minheng to take over. Due to the cramped size of the newspaper and Clark's lack of personality, neither Aban nor Zhao Minheng stayed long. This book gives a vivid description of the operation of the "English Guide" and Clark's personality, which can be used as a reference for studying the early English newspaper industry in Beijing.
